anonymous faces (books I, II, & III) [1994-2016] | The images below are selected works from “Faces of São Paulo”, “Anonymous Faces” and “Anonymous Faces & the Space-time Characters”. Every good story has a hero and a villain. Time is a merciless villain and it is the villain in the stories of the space-time characters. What better way can a common man understand, or explore the concept of space-time than through art? These photographs, mostly taken in downtown São Paulo, have been a recurring theme in the studio for more than 20 years. The subjects of the photographs were people who had been excluded from society and were dumped in the non-place. For all these years, their photographs were shown and their stories told, trapping them in space-time and making them immortal, eternal. “In many ways, somehow, someway, they borrow from me and I borrow from them. I come to a point were I can’t differentiate wether I am them, if they are me, if they ever existed or if they were but a figment of my imagination. I see myself aging, my hair falling, my beard turning white, yet my space-time characters do change and at the same time nothing changes for them. They are trapped in a loop. Trapped in the space between two photograms in a reel of film. They are all holding hands, in a circle, ever moving. As I work with each of these characters, I know that every time I attempt to break their cycle, I see myself closer and closer to them, until I am in the circle, with them, holding hands”.
